DETAILED ITINERARY:

 

The indigenous people of Rwanda have family roots from three distinct ethnic groups each with its own unique culture and rituals,but generally harmoniously living with each other.  Our Rwanda cultural tour bring you closest to these indigenous people. Previously, cultural ceremonies played a very big role in passing on vital hidden information to community members that each individual interpreted and reacted as a community expected of them. However with the increased population on land through migrations, emigrations, intermarriages and mingling with other people, the introduction of western education, the traditional Rwandan lifestyle has changed; the people are living a mixed and socially improved lifestyle.

 

 

DAY 1: ARRIVE KIGALI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
On arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by our driver/guide and be transferred to your hotel in Kigali arriving for overnight on bed and breakfast.

DAY 2: NTARAMA & NYAMATA AND GISOZI MEMORIALS VISITS
After breakfast depart for a visit to the Ntarama church where mass killings occurred during the 1994 genocide; more than 5000people were killed in the church. The Ntarama Genocide Memorial is located about 30 kilometers south of the capital city of Kigali. Located in the Bugasera region, this church and its contents are a reminder of the horrifying violence that took place at this site during Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. Learn more about the unity and reconciliation commission. Proceed to Nyamata memorial site- a church where around 2,500 people were killed and it has become emblematic of the barbaric treatment of women during the genocide. In the church at Nyamata, there will be graphic and audio-visual displays that will focus particularly on the mass rape, brutalization of women and the use of HIV as a deliberate weapon of genocide. Return to the city for lunch then visit the Gisozi geneocide memorial. Later transfer back to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 3: DEPART FOR NYUNGWE NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast our guide will be waiting to pick you up and you will depart for Nyungwe National park which takes about 6 ½  hrs drive via Butare visiting enroute, the famous National Museum at Butare and the ancient King´s Palace at Nyanza. The museum was donated in 1989 by the Belgium government with some ethnic collection, the design and concept all realized in co-operation with the Royal Museum for Central Africa of Tervuren; Belgium. Ethnographic objects are grouped together according to the theme giving premium information on the daily life. Traditional ceramics and basketry are still manufactured and belong to the finest handicrafts of the region. The National Museum remained surprisingly untouched during the civil war in 1994.Have Lunch in Butare and thereafter continue to Nyungwe national park arriving for dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 4 and 5: NYUNGWE CULTURAL VILLAGE EXPERIENCE.

After breakfast you visit the Nyungwe cultural corperative for numerous cultural activities and experiences.
You’ll learn how and enjoy the tour of the vast Tea plantation, Tea experience, tea picking and the process of making tea from leave to cup. Later in the evening join a local family to prepare food with the members.
Others are: Weave and handicraft experience, Traditional coffee experience and Education tour.

Day 6: DEPART FOR LAKE KIVU
After breakfast depart for Lake Kivu. The unpaved road gently curves back and forth as it weaves through hills and mountains beside the lake from Gisenyi to Cyangugu. Eucalyptus trees line the road, while every corner of the hills is terraced with bananas. Villagers smile and wave; you’ll end up with hands tired from waving, and feel like royalty at the end of the trip! Stop in Kibuye and visit the museum of Enviroment. Have lunch in the town and continue to Gisenyi Arriving at your hotel, nestled on the shores of Lake Kivu. Dinner and Overnight at your hotel.

 

OVERNIGHT: LAKE KIVU SERENA HOTEL

Day 7: SPEND DAY IN LAKE KIVU
Today the day is spent in Gisenyi, the largest port on the Rwandan shore of Lake Kivu, in the company of your guide who will show you the town. Enjoy a short boat ride to one of the islands in Lake Kivu or simply explore the town, enjoying the hustle and bustle of the local market or wander through the leafy streets admiring the old colonial buildings. Later break for lunch and afterwards in the afternoon enjoy a swim around the Lake.

Day 8: TRANSFER TO RUHENGERI
After breakfast you will depart for a 1 hour’ drive to Ruhengeri area the second largest town in Rwanda, with its stunning backdrop of five volcanic mountains – The Virungas- Arriving at the Red rocks intercultural exchange center for an amazing experience of brewery. Today we indulge in banana beer production to understand the chemistry about the process of brewing a local beer from bananas fruits. If you find the activity interesting enough you can join the women in squeezing the juice out of the bananas and drink a glass of juice. Understand how long juice takes to turn into alcohol after adding in sorghum floor. Enjoy the big glass of our local brew. Later do basket weaving and take a walk to visit a local family that has benefitted from this cultural tours. Continue for your local home stay arriving for dinner and overnight(Optional)

Day 9: VISIT IBY'WACHU CULTURAL VILLAGE AND TWIN LAKES/ OPTIIONAL GORILLA TREKKING
Today we visit Iby’iwacu Cultural Village a Non-Profit umbrella organization that aims at improving the lives of reformed poachers and communities around Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park through provision of conservation incentives, supporting community enterprise development and livelihood based projects. Return to your hotel for lunch, in the afternoon transfer to the twin lakes of Bulera & Ruhondo. Their deep blue waters ringed by steep hills and tall waterfalls with the outlines of the nearby Virunga Volcanoes provide a spectacular backdrop. Later drive back to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 10: TRANSFER BACK TO KIGALI AND VISIT NYAMIRAMBO WOMEN CENTRE
After breakfast you will depart for Kigali arriving it time and visit Nyamirambo womens centre,, the tours start with the walking tour from the center with a traditional snack, a quick Kinyarwanda language lesson, and an introduction to the Center and its activities. It then weaves through Nyamirambo, one of Kigali’s oldest neighborhoods. Along the way guides lead participants into a women's hairdressing salon where the adventurous type can get a free braid; into a family compound to pound cassava leaves; by two mosques and a lookout view over Kigali; and into a tailor shop to feel the fabrics you'll otherwise see styled on the streets. Also engage in last minute shopping in one of the friendliest African capitals, before returning to the airport for your onward international flight back home.
